(genitive singular is 'geise', nominitive plural is 'geasa', genitive plural 'geas'. These are pronounced (roughly) respectively as 'gesh', 'GAYshuh' 'GASuh' and 'gass' 1. Taboo, prohibition. 2. Binding injunction. 3. Spell ( as in a love spell, etc. )

Celtic society, and therefore mythology, abounds in prohibitions, taboos, or bonds that, when placed on a person or persons, compel them to obey instructions. From the sagas, as well as the Brehonic law systems, the taboos come down primarily as a method of operation which is placed at the disposal of the Draoíthe (Druh-wee-uh-huh) i.e., Druids)to ensure their authority and the efficacy of their edicts. The transgressor of a geis was exposed to the rejection of his society and placed outside the social order. Transgression, in addition to bringing shame and outlawry, usually meant a painful death. The power of the geis was above human and divine jurisdiction and brushed aside all previous rulings, establishing a new order through the wishes of the person controlling it.

I hope this is helpful.

.. with palms joined.Bunan Unsuihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18108482311596424454noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3452764492270123985.post-76354641071837198992009-10-22T00:09:54.686-04:002009-10-22T00:09:54.686-04:00Dear Monk,

The word geas (I used it to mean a burden, esp, of a duty that one cannot put down) I have used for years, but is it possible that I have conflated 2 or more words?

Anyway, it is wonderful and comforting to know you are there. Alone we are, yes, but not lonely, when there are others who walk the path as well.

What does ROZB mean?

Take care, fellow traveler.

Namaste

YogiYogihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18149759309589778285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3452764492270123985.post-55772509848394334892009-10-21T09:58:57.919-04:002009-10-21T09:58:57.919-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.Bunan Unsuihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18108482311596424454noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3452764492270123985.post-35015361056551129322009-10-21T09:58:49.415-04:002009-10-21T09:58:49.415-04:00Dear Yogi,

(I breath in!)

It has been my geas to search for the way to "meditate in the marketplace", with family, job, external interests. I am fascinated to read of your journey, and its parallels with mine own, though we are also very different.

Please continue to speak about your journey.

In deep appreciation and love,

YogiYogihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18149759309589778285noreply@blogger.com
